Business energy and utilities for gyms, fitness studios and leisure centres
Gyms run long hours with lights, air handling, showers and equipment all working at once, and leisure centres with pools add heated water to the mix. We look after the contracts behind the building so you can focus on members.
- Heating, ventilation and hot water considered when we compare gas
- Electricity quoted separately, with day and night rates as printed
- Front-desk and café card payments compared

How Helios helps gyms and leisure clubs.
Long opening hours, showers and pools. Helios checks your energy and water against your real usage and keeps every contract in one place.
Pools and showers on the right contract
Heating pools and hot water for showers drive your bills. We check gas and electricity separately against your real usage.
Water checked against your meters
Showers, changing rooms and pools use a lot of water. We compare your bills with your readings and your retailer’s tariff.
One club or a chain
Each site checked on its own consumption, with every end date and document on one list in your portal.
Card payments at reception
Card machines at reception compared on fees and terms, alongside your other contracts.
What gyms usually need from us
Why gym and leisure energy bills are high
Energy is the product
In 2022 ukactive said gyms, pools and leisure centres were highly vulnerable to rising energy costs because of the sector’s high dependency on energy, all year round.

Pools lose heat constantly
The Carbon Trust says pool water must be heated continually to overcome the cooling effect of evaporation.

Pool halls need air handling
The same guide says space heating and ventilation account for a large proportion of energy use in pool halls.

Pools and wet-side facilities
The Carbon Trust’s swimming pool guide calls insulated pool covers one of the most cost-effective investments available to pool managers, says lighting can account for up to 16% of energy costs in an indoor pool hall, and notes that backwashing filters loses heated water. The guide dates from 2008, so treat it as a guide to where energy goes rather than current prices.
For a leisure centre, that means the gas contract and the water bill matter as much as electricity. We quote each separately against your own bills.

Contract end dates and notice windows
If a fixed contract ends with nothing new agreed, Ofgem says you can be moved onto out-of-contract or deemed rates, which are usually higher than negotiated rates. Some contracts renew automatically at the end of the term, usually for 12 months. We record each end date and notice window before we quote.

Frequently asked questions
What uses the most energy in a gym?
It depends on the site. Lighting, air handling, showers and equipment are the usual loads; with a pool, heating the water and the pool hall usually dominates.
Do Simpler Recycling rules apply to gyms?
Yes. Workplaces in England must keep dry recyclables, food waste and general waste apart. Businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees have until 31 March 2027.
Is public liability insurance compulsory for a gym?
The ABI says public liability is generally voluntary, but most businesses that welcome the public choose to have it. Employers’ liability is compulsory once you employ staff.
Can you help with a pool’s water bill?
In England you can choose your water retailer. We check the charges on your bill and compare retailers.
