Business energy and utilities for hotels

A hotel never really closes. Heating, hot water, kitchens, lifts and, in some hotels, a pool run day and night, and every room adds to the water bill. We look after the contracts behind all of it, from a ten-room guest house to a group of hotels.

  • Heating and hot water loads considered when we compare gas
  • Each site checked on its own usage if you run more than one hotel

Why Helios

How Helios helps hotels.

Rooms, kitchens, laundry and the back office run around the clock. Helios puts every utility contract in one place, with one contact.

One contact for every department

Kitchen, rooms, laundry and spa: electricity, gas, water, waste and insurance renewals on one list.

Heating and hot water around the clock

Hotels heat water and rooms day and night. We check gas and electricity separately against your real usage.

Water checked against your meters

Rooms, kitchens and laundry use a lot of water. We compare your bills with your meter readings and your retailer’s tariff.

One hotel or a group

Each property is checked on its own consumption and contract dates, with every site on one list in your portal.

What hotels usually need from us

Business electricity

Rooms, kitchens, lifts, lighting and air handling, often with half-hourly metering on larger sites.

Business water

Rooms, kitchens and laundry. In England you can choose your water retailer.

Waste and recycling

General waste, food waste, glass, cardboard and dry mixed recycling.

Card machines

Card payments at reception, the bar and the restaurant.

Telecoms

Broadband, phones and the lines your lifts and alarms rely on.

Cash advance

Insurance

Cover arranged through FCA-authorised partner brokers.

Where hotel energy goes

Heating and hot water

The Carbon Trust says heating can account for more than 40% of energy use in non-domestic buildings, and that hot water can lead to considerable costs in hospitality.

Heat escaping the building

Around two thirds of the heat from a typical hospitality building is lost through the building fabric, according to the Carbon Trust.

Pools and leisure

For hotels with leisure facilities, the Carbon Trust says the pool alone can account for a significant amount of total energy costs.

Single and multi-site contracts, end dates and notice windows

Larger hotels may sit outside Ofgem’s microbusiness definition but still within the Energy Ombudsman’s small business definition: fewer than 50 employees plus turnover limits, or up to 200,000 kWh of electricity or 500,000 kWh of gas a year. Which one applies affects how disputes are handled.

Whatever your size, a fixed contract that ends with nothing new agreed can move you onto out-of-contract or deemed rates, which Ofgem says are usually higher than negotiated rates. We record each meter’s end date and notice window before we quote.

Water, waste and recycling for hotels

In England, about 1.2 million non-household customers can choose their water retailer. In Wales, only customers using more than 50 million litres a year can switch, and in Scotland businesses choose a licensed provider.

Hotels in England must keep food waste, dry recyclables and general waste apart under Simpler Recycling, and food waste must be collected even where a workplace does not serve food. In Wales, hotels are named in the workplace recycling guidance, and from 6 April 2026 all small electricals must be separated too.

One hotel or a group

A single hotel or guest house

One set of meters, but heavy use around the clock. We check your end dates and quote electricity and gas separately against your own consumption.

Several hotels

Each hotel has its own meters, usage profile and end dates. We check each site on its own usage, not a group average. See multi-site groups.

Keeping contracts and documents in order

Hotels often carry more contracts than any other hospitality business.

  • Electricity and gas end dates and notice windows for every meter
  • Water account and retailer for each site
  • Waste and glass collection schedules
  • Phone lines used by lifts, alarms and door entry
  • Insurance renewal dates

What to send us

Send what you have and we will ask for anything else we need.

  • Recent electricity and gas bills for each meter
  • Your water bill
  • Your waste invoices
  • Your phone and broadband bills
  • Your insurance schedule and renewal date, if you want a quote

What we may find

It depends on your bills and contracts. These are the things we check.

  • Meters on out-of-contract or deemed rates
  • Waste streams that do not meet the recycling rules
  • Estimated water bills where readings are not being taken

Frequently asked questions

Can a hotel switch water supplier?

In England, yes: most non-household customers can choose their retailer. In Wales only very large users can switch, and in Scotland you choose a licensed provider.

What insurance does a hotel need?

Employers’ liability is compulsory once you employ staff, with cover of at least £5 million. Buildings cover is needed if your lease or mortgage requires it, and business interruption cover protects income if you cannot trade. We introduce you to FCA-authorised partner brokers, who arrange the cover.

Will our lift phone work after 2027?

Openreach lists lift emergency phones among equipment that may need upgrading or reconfiguring. Check with your lift maintenance company and tell us what line it uses.

Do you quote gas and electricity together?

Never blended. They are separate contracts with separate rates, so we quote each on its own.

Bring your hotel into one place.

Send us a recent bill and we will start with your contract dates and prices. Add the rest of your services whenever you are ready.
